Superoxide Dismutase Antioxidant ReviewedHow does Superoxide Dismutase compare? Please read our report below......
Supplement Details:There are two types of superoxide dismutase found in the body. One is the copper/zinc (Cu/Zn) SOD while the other is manganese (Mn) SOD. These two types have their own functions. The first one is responsible in protecting the cytoplasm of the cell while the latter is responsible in protecting the mitochondria (or the powerhouse of the cell) from damages brought about by free radicals.
In cases where there are insufficient amount of Cu-Zn dependent SOD, it may cause diseases known as ALS or the Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis or commonly known as Lou Gehrig's disease. This disease is deadly because it can result to deterioration of motor nerve cells that are found in the brain and in the spinal cord. When there is an insufficient amount of superoxide dismutase in the brain, the nerve cells remain unprotected and free radicals attack and kill these nerve cells. Because of this, researchers are now trying to study about the effect of vitamin E and other antioxidant with regards to preventing this disease. They are now trying to find out if other forms of antioxidant can take the place of SOD in preventing the damage brought about by free radicals. So far, the preliminary studies show that vitamin E supplements are effective in replacing the required superoxide dismutase in cases of ALS. Researchers claim that with the frequent intake of vitamin E, the level of death in ALS is reduced to up to 62%. This is in comparison with individuals who do not take vitamin E at all.
In addition to this, SOD also treats inflammatory diseases, inflammatory bowel disease, arthritis, corneal ulcer, prostate problems, burn injuries and damages brought about by long term exposure to radiation and smoke. It is also responsible in reducing the side effects brought about by cancer drugs, especially during chemotherapy session.
Superoxide dismutase is found naturally in most green plants, like in broccoli, cabbage, barley grass and wheatgrass. You should also include a lot of vitamin C and copper in your diet since these nutrients are required to be able to produce the superoxide dismutase. There are also several forms of supplements for SOD. There are topical creams which help in reducing wrinkles, lightening hyper pigmentation and scar tissues. It is also effective for burns and healing wounds as well as for protecting against harmful UV rays.
Further, superoxide dismutase is also available through sublingual oral supplements, like enteric coated pills and injections. However, you should note that superoxide dismutase is effective once it is absorbed by the small intestines so it is better if you prefer the oral supplements. This is because it has to pass the digestive juices to be absorbed by the body.
