Supplement Overview: The first thing that comes to mind when you hear the word lycopene is tomatoes. This is because tomatoes are one of the best sources for the pigment lycopene. Lycopene is a pigment that gives the red color of watermelon and tomatoes. Aside from being a pigment, it is also a strong antioxidant. There were studies that proved that lycopene is associated with preventing prostate cancer and cardiovascular diseases.

Just like the alpha and beta carotenes, lutein is also a member of the carotenoid family. It is likewise, not being produced by the body, like the lutein. The only way to get lycopene is through the food that you take in. Foods that are rich in lycopene are mostly tomato products like spaghetti sauce, tomato sauce, tomato juice, ketchup and pizza sauce. These products, the processed tomato products are more easily absorbed by the body compared when eating fresh tomatoes. In order to make the body absorb the fresh tomatoes easier, you can cook it with little oil. Other sources include watermelon, pink grapefruit and red peppers. To make it easier and faster to remember, just think of the red and yellow colored fruits and vegetables.

 

The function of the lycopene is to help prevent cancer in areas in the body like in the digestive tract, colon, prostate and lungs. In a study which was made in Italy , they found out that people who ate seven or more servings a week of raw tomatoes were 60 percent less likely to develop cancer of the stomach, colon and rectum as compared with individuals who have two or lesser servings per week.

 

In addition, there were also studies, which were recently made showing that those who have more lycopene in their diets have lesser chances of acquiring AMD or the Age-related Macular Degeneration and cataracts. There were also studies made that those who eats more food with lycopene has lesser chances of acquiring heart ailments. Again, as an antioxidant, the lycopene helps in preventing the clogging of the arteries. Instead of forming bad cholesterols, the good cholesterols are even increased. Almost half of the members of the set showed this result.

 

Since lycopene is not produced in the body, there are also a number of lycopene supplement products that are available in the market. These products, however, do not give the same result as when you are taking whole tomato products. The required amount of lycopene per day is about 6.5 milligrams in order to get he adequate antioxidant benefits. So it is still better to take in lycopene from natural sources such as the fruits and vegetables mentioned earlier. In case you are planning to take these as fresh, remember to add a little amount of fat and oil to make the absorption of the lycopene better.

 

So what are you waiting for, the next time you cook your spaghetti or order your pizza, make sure that you request that they add more tomato sauce and spaghetti sauce to it. Also, never forget the benefits of the cheese as this could help you be safe from cancer but you will also have clearer and better eye sight.
