Bilberry Antioxidant ReviewedHow does Bilberry compare? Please read our report below......
Supplement Details:Studies have shown that bilberry extracts combined with Vitamin E halted the progression of cataracts in 97% of the participants tested. Not only has bilberry been seen to be effective in managing eye disorders, it has also been suspected of being able to improve night vision due to the increased ability in the eye to quickly adapt to varying levels of light intensity.
One particular extract taken from bilberry ( Vaccinium Myrtillus Anthocyanoside or VMA) has been found to be effective in the treatment of a condition called chronic venous insufficiency, whose symptoms include itching, swelling, tenderness and even ulcerations on the legs, and varicose veins. Another condition that has been thought to be treatable by VMA is Raynaud's disease whose symptoms include numbness of the extremities, especially when exposed to cold weather conditions.
Billberry has been prescribed to promote good circulation in the arteries, thus effectively mitigating atherosclerosis, a condition brought about by the build up of plaque in the arterial walls that eventually leads to the blocking of the blood flow and transportation of oxygen to the heart.
One of the earliest uses of bilberry is the mitigation of gastrointestinal maladies such as diarrhoea (bilberry mixed with honey was the common treatment). It has also been found to be effective in treating mouth sores because of its claimed antiseptic properties. Other claims of medical conditions that can be treated with bilberry are diabetes, fibrocystic breast disease (non-cancerous lumpiness of the breast tissue) and dysmenorrhoea.
Available in tinctures and capsules, bilberry extracts are often prescribed in 80 to 160-milligram doses with frequencies largely determined by the condition to be treated. While it is also possible to alternatively consume fresh or dried bilberries, it is more advisable to take the accurately measured doses for optimal effect. Contraindications, though rare, may include upset stomach, dizziness and headaches. Care must also be taken in mixing bilberry with drugs or herbs that lower blood pressure, blood sugar, cause diarrhoea or have a thinning effect on the blood. Consult your doctor first before embarking on a bilberry extract treatment.
